HAND CARVED GLASS - RICHMOND VA. -
Dedicated to quality engraving since 2013.
The process of cameo engraving glass began ARound 25 BCE in Ancient Rome. It is an art form that begins by melting different colored glasses on top of each other. Once the desired layers, thicknesses, and shape have been achieved, the glass is slowly and carefully cooled back to room temperature. Once cooled, the glass is carved away using a hand-drill (aka rotary tool) and diamond-plated burrs. As the artist engraves the glass, they reveal different layers of color the deeper they carve.
About two thousand years after its invention, Rye has been an avid student and teacher in the art of cameo engraving. In the very small and obscure world that cameo is; its important to give honor to the teachers that have been instrumental in his ability to develop his skills. In no order, huge thanks goes to April Surgent, Jimmy Anderegg, Greg Dietrich, Pavlina Cambalova, Helen Millard, and Dick Ditore.
